Hosting an event? How to be an amazing MC

As an MC (Master of Ceremonies) at an event, you have an important role. It’s your responsibility to facilitate the event, ensure that the program goes ahead without a hitch, and control the timing and sequence of events.


Without an MC, the event has no structure or flow, and no entertainment!


Hosting an event as an MC can be a daunting task. For some, they seem to be born into the role and feel completely at ease in the spotlight. For others, particularly if it’s your first time MC-ing, it’s normal for a few butterflies to make an appearance.


Being prepared and well briefed can make all the difference. Here are some expert tips that can help you get prepared and enjoy the excitement of the event a whole lot more.


1. Prepare an introduction. Crafting a captivating story that draws your audience in before you get into the mundane tasks of thanking the sponsors and honouring guests is a great way to launch yourself as an MC. Introduce yourself, have a narrative prepared, relax and stay focused on the task at hand. You can also prepare by familiarising yourself with the run sheet for the event ahead.


2. Stay humble. As an MC, you are there to keep things moving and to make sure that the speakers, guests and hosts are celebrated. While delivering a speech does require you to take centre stage, always remember to stay humble and keep the focus on the speakers, guests and hosts.


3. Set the tone for the event. A confident energy with positive reinforcement throughout your speech will give you a great sense of direction and will set the tone for the event. Find a happy medium between a serious and professional approach and putting out a high-energy vibe.


4. Maintain timeframes. An award-winner making a speech may go on for too long and swerve off topic, which will hijack the momentum of your event. Speakers are well briefed about their time on stage and should know their time limit. An MC needs to stay close to the lectern or microphone, keep time and ensure people’s speeches are brief.


5.  The transition between speakers. A clever way to move from one speaker to the next is to give a short recap of their speech or compliment them on what was said. Then, set-up the next presentation right after their speech. Use your introduction speech as your guideline to set-up the next speaker.


6.  Be prepared to improvise. Not everything goes to plan, sobe prepared for any unforeseen circumstances, such as a speaker not showing up or an incident at the event. Think ahead about how you will handle a situation that’s completely out of your control. Live events often have things that can distract you from being in control as an MC. The key is to stick as closely as possible to the agenda and keep things moving forward ­– no matter what happens.


7.  Microphone etiquette. It’s important to hold the microphone within two inches of your mouth as it can only amplify sounds that are within its range. Your audio technician will control the microphone levels so all your guests can hear you clearly but there’s only so much they can do if the microphone is not being handled properly. Having the microphone too close to your mouth will muffle everything, but holding it too far away will thin your words out.


8.  Have a closing speech prepared. Just like the opening ceremony, you need to tie your MC-ing together with a closing story or a call to action. Recap the highlights of the evening and challenge the audience for feedback or a response. A closing statement is a great way to remind people how good your event was!


When you practice your opening and closing speeches, imagine yourself sitting in the audience listening to what was just said. If it’s not great, refine your content until you have something that you love and that will keep the audience hanging on your every word.
